Vice President Sara Duterte urges Filipinos to protect the Philippine Eagle and forests in Philippine Eagle Week message.
In observance of Philippine Eagle Week, Vice President Sara Z. Duterte issued a powerful call to action, urging Filipinos to protect the critically endangered Philippine Eagle—an emblem of national pride and a key indicator of the country’s forest health.
With fewer than 400 breeding pairs remaining in the wild, the Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) is on the verge of extinction. These majestic raptors, endemic to the Philippines, require vast tracts of healthy forest to thrive and reproduce. They take up to seven years to reach maturity and lay only one egg every two years, making their recovery especially difficult without human intervention.
“The survival of the Philippine Eagle is our responsibility. This Philippine Eagle Week, I call on every Filipino to become guardians of these magnificent birds by protecting our forests, planting native trees, and speaking out against habitat destruction,” VP Sara said.
The Vice President highlighted the Office of the Vice President’s “PagbaBAGo: A Million Trees Campaign” as a tangible response to the urgent need for reforestation. The initiative aims to restore forest ecosystems across the archipelago, not only to safeguard wildlife habitats but also to mitigate climate change, prevent landslides, and support biodiversity.
“The PagbaBAGo: A Million Trees Campaign works to regenerate forests across our islands, creating safe havens for wildlife that depend on these ecosystems. What we save today flies free tomorrow. Our children deserve to witness Philippine Eagles soaring in our skies.” VP Sara noted.
She called on Filipinos to see tree planting and forest protection as a moral and generational duty, not only for the eagle but for the country’s ecological future.
“Sa bawat puno na ating itatanim, sa bawat kagubatan na ating pangangalagaan, nariyan ang pangako ng isang magandang kinabukasan para sa agila at sa susunod na henerasyon ng mga Pilipino,” (In every tree we plant and every forest we protect lies the promise of a better future—for the eagle and for the next generation of Filipinos,) VP Sara said.
